A Registered Nurse with Four Years of Service at the Hospital is Humbled by this Honor

EDEN, N.C., April 15, 2025 — Emergency Department Nurse, Maggie Reeder, RN, was honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at UNC Health Rockingham. Nursing leadership along with senior administrators gathered on the unit to celebrate Reeder with her fellow nursing and hospitalist teammates. Reeder’s family members and a close friend were also present for the celebration.

A DAISY nomination for Reeder came from the family member of a patient in the Emergency Department. The family member shared, “As a daughter I was scared to death and this nurse went above and beyond to make sure we understood every step of his journey! She was always so understanding and never frustrated with questions that we had. There were no beds available at the time and this nurse made his extended ED visit much more pleasant. She is kind, empathetic, and an amazing nurse. I hope this nurse stays at UNC Health Rockingham for her entire career!”

Reeder received two additional nominations this quarter, which speaks to the type of nurse she strives to be. Following a tearful reception, Reeder said, “Receiving the Daisy Award is humbling, and I am so honored to be recognized for striving to go above and beyond for all of my patients.”

When asked about what motivates and inspires about her work as a nurse, Maggie shared that serving her small rural community and making a difference in the lives of her patients and their families is what brings her joy.

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of thirty-three. His family wanted a meaningful way to recognize and honor nurses who, like those caring for Patrick and his family, provide excellent clinical care while showing great compassion for their patients. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.
