The Rockingham County Literacy Project, formerly administered by the Rockingham County Public Library and Rockingham Community College, has been in operation since 1980. It trains and used volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with adults on a regular basis to help them reach their goals (through improving their reading, writing, and math skills). Student goals may include learning to read or to read better, getting a driver's license, passing the GED test, getting a job or maintaining their present employment, or being able to help their children with their homework. Students who do not speak English as their first language may learn to read, write, and speak English or to speak it better. Instructional materials are provided free of charge. Tutors and students meet about 1-3 hours per week to work and progress toward meeting the students' needs. Students are accessed about every 6 months, and tutors receive the results to help them plan for future lessons.
The Literacy Project office is located at 203-F in the Bishopric Lifelong Learning Center, on the Rockingham Community College Campus, 568 County Home Road, Wentworth, NC 27375.
